This is an on demand webinar and is available to watch as soon as you regiser

Whether it be something accidentally left on the floor that the dog has picked up or perhaps an item carelessly discarded by someone in the street, being able to ask a dog to drop something they are now holding in their mouth, and for them to happily oblige, is an essential skill!

Join Louise Stapleton-Frappell for this skills and knowledge-based presentation in which she will share a fun 7-step training ‘recipe’ that includes all the ‘ingredients’ that are needed to teach a puppy, or even an older dog, to, happily, quickly, and willingly, drop something that they are holding in their mouth, in response to either a visual or a verbal cue.

The step-by-step training games included in the presentation cover all the criteria for teaching a dog to drop a chew stick, in a way that is fun for both dogs and caregivers.

Attendees will learn how to successfully use the ‘Give-Take-Exchange’ method; how to proof the newly taught cues, and how to generalize the skill.  You will also learn how to use the ‘Train-Test-Train’ method and how to adapt the 7-Step training plan, when needed.  Lots of video footage is included to clearly demonstrate all the training steps, as well as tips regarding what to do if things do not go exactly to plan!

Learning Objectives:

  • Help prevent resource guarding BEFORE it becomes a problem.
  • Learn how to use the ‘Train-Test-Train’ method.
  • Learn how to effortlessly teach a visual ‘drop’ cue.
  • Learn how and when to introduce a verbal “drop” cue, using the ‘New-Cue, Old-Cue’ method.
  • Gain a clear understanding of the ‘Give-Take-Exchange’ method.
  •  Learn additional ‘prompts’ that can be used to help a dog release an item they are holding in their mouth.
