Welcome to the latest edition of NEWS from the Guild, published in association with BARKS from the Guild, PPG’s bi-monthly trade publication for pet professionals.
PPG Launches Let’s Celebrate +R Photo/Video Competition
 PPG has marked November 17, 2018 as the International Day of Advocacy to celebrate the first anniversary of the official launch of its international advocacy initiative, the Shock-Free Coalition. The focal point of the celebration will be Let's Celebrate +R, a photo and video competition where pet professionals and enthusiasts can showcase the best of positive reinforcement-based pet training and education. Let's Celebrate +R will run from seven days prior to seven days post November 17. Entry will be via both PPG's North America/International and Europe websites with prizes issued to the winners selected from submissions to both sites. To participate, simply take a photo and/or make a short video and submit it to one of the competition categories. Great prizes are on offer, including a ticket to PPG’s Canine Aggression and Bite Prevention Seminar 2019 in Portland, Oregon and Woof 2019 in Nottingham, England. Read press release. PPG Responds to Joint IAABC, APDT and CCPDT Code of Ethics "While PPG commends the initial move made jointly by the IAABC, APDT and CCPDT, it calls for a bigger initial step to be made. Surely all professionals involved in the training, care and management of pets can agree that there is never a scenario, morally or ethically, where the implementation of electric shock can ever be justified or deemed necessary. PPG thus proposes an alternative first step: that electric shock is taken off the table once and for all." Read full response here. PPG Responds to UK Shock Collar Ban PPG fully supports and applauds the Government of the United Kingdom’s decision to implement a nationwide ban on the use of remote control electric shock collars for the training, management, and care for pets. Further, PPG is in full agreement with the U.K. Kennel Club (2018) that “the use of electric shock collars as a training method has a long term negative welfare impact on dogs.” Read full response. PPG has launched a junior membership program for children, teenagers and young adults to help them learn and understand the fundamentals of pet care, behavior and training, and give them an insight into the possibility of working with animals in a force-free, fear-free manner. The new memberships have been divided into three categories: Category One - Provisional Junior Basic (age group 8-12 years); Category Two - Provisional Junior Advanced (age group 13-17 years); and Category Three - Provisional Apprentice (age group 18-20 years). The PPG Equine Committee has appointed Mary Richards as its new chair, effective immediately. Richards holds a bachelor’s in psychology and has completed several other programs focusing on equine management, including behavior, welfare and nutrition. She has over two decades of professional experience training animals in a variety of environments, ranging from zoos to large animal facilities. She owns and operates The Enriched Equine in Orlando, Florida and is also a zoological manager at a large equine facility in Orlando with more than 80 horses and ponies where she works closely with the facility's staff on training and enrichment programs. PPG would like to thank outgoing chair Michelle Martiya for all her hard work and continued support. October Workshops – Last Chance!
PPG is hosting back-to-back workshops at its HQ in Tampa, Florida next month. Let's Coach Scent Work!, hosted by Robert Hewings, head of learning and development for the United Kingdom College of Scent Detection, takes place on October 20 – 21, 2018 and will be Hewings’ first-ever appearance in the United States.
