PPG has appointed the first regional coordinators for its Shock-Free Coalition, a global advocacy campaign which aims to end the practice of administering electric shock to train, manage, and care for pets. Coordinators will work directly with PPG leadership in tandem with its legal and public relations partners to begin working on legislation worldwide. The first regional coordinators will all help build their roles from a grassroots level and have been named as Kim Silver (Arizona, USA), Pam Francis-Tuss (California, USA), Eve Salimbene and Joyce Kesling (Florida, USA), Don Hanson (Maine, USA), Rain Jordan (Oregon, USA), Stefania Butkovic (Canada), Rachel Hayball (England, United Kingdom), Claire Staines (Scotland, United Kingdom) and Yvette Potter (Gibraltar). PPG is still taking applications for the role and many more are set to join them as the initiative builds momentum. The Shock-Free Coalition is the first advocacy program of its kind to have been initiated by a member association for pet professionals. Read the full press release. PPG Launches New Media Platform PPG has taken its bimonthly trade publication, BARKS from the Guild, to the next level with the launch of a separate, all-encompassing media platform to include not only the magazine, but also PPG podcasts and blog posts, which have been rebranded as BARKS Podcasts and BARKS Blog respectively. The new BARKS website features selected magazine articles, both past and present, under the categories canine, feline, avian, equine, training, behavior, business, advocacy, and editor’s picks as well as PPG’s entire catalog of blog posts and podcasts, which has been transferred to the new platform. Content will be changed and added regularly to ensure a dynamic and educational user experience. At present, users have options to subscribe both to the BARKS blog and the upcoming print edition of BARKS. Transfer Your Credential to PPAB If you have an existing and recognized pet industry credential through an independent third party, you can now transfer that credential and sport a professional credential, via PPG’s credentialing arm The Pet Professional Accreditation Board, that supports PPG’s Guiding Principles, showing that you believe shock, choke, prong, pain, fear and force are completely unnecessary in the training, care and management of pets. New PPG Membership Cards PPG membership cards are now available. If you login to the PPG website from the home page and click on your login name, you will see a drop down menu for view profile. From here you can view your membership card and download it as a PNG or a PDF file for printing.
The PPG website has some excellent resources for pet owners, who can join for free! Meanwhile, the member area has great educational handouts you can co-brand and use in your business, for example, this PDF on Puppy Training Resources.
PPG to Host Free Day of Fun in Florida! PPG is to hold a day of free education and fun for Florida-based PPG members and DogSmiths on Sunday, September 16, 2018 at its headquarters in Tampa. The schedule includes presentations by PPG president, Niki Tudge, local veterinarian, Dr. Lynn Honeckman, and Tampa-based dog trainer and behavior consultant, Angelica Steinker. If you bring your dog, you can take part in a group training session to prepare for an afternoon of fun competitions, including a “just-4-fun” agility competition. If you don’t have your dog, then you are welcome to help coordinate and judge the event. There will even be an award ceremony for the winners. Limited spots available! Register here.
Showring Workshop: Change of Date The Successfully Train and Compete in the Showring – Learn the Knowledge and Skills You Need to Compete or Teach a Professional Curriculum workshop, presented by Vicki Ronchette and supported by Niki Tudge, has been moved to on Saturday, September 21 – Sunday, September 22, 2019. Taking place at PPG’s Tampa, Florida HQ, the event is suitable for pet owners interested in learning about show dogs, current competitors who want to up their game, and dog trainers who want to develop the skills and knowledge to launch their own show dog classes and support their clients in achieving their goals.
PPG Australia Summit Hailed a Success PPG marked another milestone at the end of July by hosting its first ever Australian summit at the Bankstown Sports Center in Sydney. PPG Australia president Barbara Hodel delivered the opening address and welcomed both attendees, key international speakers Chirag Patel, Michele Pouliot, and Kathy Sdao, and local speakers Dr. Kat Gregory, Louise Ginman, Louise Newman, Alexis Davison, Laura Ryder, in what was a mix of lectures and applied behavior analysis workshops. The November issue of BARKS from the Guild will have a full report, but here’s a sneak preview with pictures (below, left) showing Hodel (right) kicking off proceedings by introducing the first general session presenter, Sdao; and (below, right) presenters (left to right) Patel, Sdao and Pouliot at registration.

Workshop for Shelter Workers/Volunteers Are you a science-minded PPG member that works in shelter behavior and training department or a trainer that works with shelters? You may be interested in this five-day workshop in Roanoke, Virginia - August 20-24, 2018. The workshop will be a combination of discussion and hands-on learning and focus on the art and science of behavior and training in animal shelters in the style of applied science, and discuss best practices to inform what we do - whether it's behavioral observation, interventions, assessment, enrichment or community support.
